5 GHz WLAN craps out (upon radar detection?) - start_dfs_cac() failed

Well this is now happening almost daily. Unless I'm mistaken, the radio should fall back to a safe, non-DFS channel, but it just dies. So there's definitely something messy going on.

I have for now switched to another DFS channel, I hope there's less interference on that one.

is there any change if you run;

wifi down
/etc/init.d/wpad restart
sleep 10
wifi up

( the other thing to toggle and test is VHT80 > VHT40 and auto / no auto <- which you've done )
( when it craps out... does it say 'client' ? )

After doing the following, I'm seeing this:

Wifi status shows the radio is up, but it seems to take quite a while before the clients actually see it:

@anon50098793 Thanks for the wpad hint, that does seem to help. I'm not sure what's going wrong here though.

A station connected at the end of the log. It is on the air.

The new channel selected is 124, which is in the same 80 MHz group as the original channel 116 where radar was detected. So I'm not sure how that is supposed to work. If there is radar on 116 and you want 80 MHz, you should avoid the whole group 116-128 and make your initial channel selection in a different group.

Or try a smaller bandwidth.

The issue at hand is: why doesn't the station fall back to a non-DFS channel? From what I understand that should be default behaviour.

This was done in master recently. It may explain that?

Maybe you can supply a channel list consisting of 36 and 124 to allow it to jump?

Thanks - I gave that a shot. This seems to work:

option channel 'auto'
option channels '149, 100, 36' 

I had it as 132, 100, 36 first but it just seemed to fall back to non-DFS 36.

@mk24 My bad indeed, I checked again and see now 124 is the same block as 116. Tried the 132 block, no dice either.

The fallback channel list should work also without that "auto".

As VHT160 and DFS channel usage gets wider, I guess that more people will run into this kind of issue, so I re-opened this old thread to document the current status...

I ran into this today, 5GHz wifi (at channel 100) in one of my routers dying during the night, and it took a while to notice in morning :frowning:

Apparently, if there is no fallback channel list provided, the 5Ghz wifi may remain dead after a DFS event. It took a wlan0 restart to get back the normal functionality.

I will likely switch to VHT80 and provide a fallback channel list. (but no "auto".)

@hnyman can you explain this more? is openwrt missing a fallback chan list? looks like ath11k is also affected

I think so.

If only single channel from the DFS space is defined as the channel, a DFS event may cause the radio to come offline as there is no fallback into which hostapd could move. "no DFS channels left"

The list can be declared in hostapd? Adding support for uci and luci is very easy...
(like if a dfs channel is selected, show a list for the fallback channel where you can select multiple values)

Yes. Already supported, see above an example from Borromini.

The may arise easier with vht160 as there may be not many alternatives especially if you have two or more routers.
I reverted to vht80 so that I can define separate fallback channels for both routers.

So from what I can see we are just lacking support for this in luci. let me check the wiki

If I only provide other DFS channels as fallback, will there be a 1 minute delay before wifi can come back online?

That is not possible for VHT160. If channel 36 is available for fallback it will stay there forever as there is no DFS event...

@hnyman It is pointed out also in this github issue. I write a small script that detects an issue and restartes wifi but would like to see a channel 36 fallback with switch to DFS channel automatically in hostap.
