24.10 breaks Sophos XG 85w Rev 3

I have a Sophos XG 85w Rev 3 device (Intel Atom E3930 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 8 GB eMMC) running ext4 non-UEFI firmware. Tried upgrading it to 24.10 using auc; it upgraded, but got stuck on boot less than three seconds in. Tried booting 24.10 (ext4 non-UEFI) from a USB stick, appears to be the same error. Here's the tail end of the boot log as seen on the console:

After that, full stop. The device doesn't react even to the power button, whether it's a short press or a long press. Pulling the power cable is the only way out.

Booting the latest 23.* from a USB stick is completely unproblematic; installation of the latest 23.* also causes no issues.

The issue has been replicated on a second device, so it doesn't look like a single unit misbehaving...

I used Foxclone to clone OpenWRT from one SG 105 to another. Since the SG 105 has only 2 USB ports, it required a USB hub to accommodate the Foxclone boot USB drive, the USB target drive, a mouse and a keyboard. The target SG 105 booted normally.

This is a desperation gambit. But it might give you better clues as to what is the real problem.

I am assuming that all x86 OpenWRT installations are largely the same. So you would clone your SG 115 24.10 installation and move it to your SG 85 to see whether it would boot. It is a desperation gambit.

85 is the strange duck in the flock; it has eMMC storage and Realtek wired NICs. The 1xx models have SATA storage and Intel wired NICs. So configuration has significant differences...

Bump and additional information: running ext4/UEFI firmware from a USB stick results in the same error...
