Say both of them have the same specs.
Would the 4x4:3 handle more clients than the 3x3:3 as both have the same number of streams?

You've got a few limits that you need to worry about, perhaps more than the number of streams:

  • Airtime -- 802.11 is half-duplex and there are also various management frames taking up time slots; one rule of thumb is generally no more than ~25 active clients per AP
  • Bandwidth between the CPU and the wireless subsystem or card. Even DMA isn't instantaneous.
  • CPU throughput
