I just got a WL-500g the other day, and it seems to be working fine with the default trx with the exception of resetmon and failsafe. That is, if you boot "normally", it tries to go to failsafe but never actually assigns an IP to an interface that is pingable. If you hold down the reset button during boot, however (openwrt failsafe, not factory def), it boots normally. It appears that resetmon returns the opposite values on this box.

In any case, I couldn't get it to boot, so I started adding nvram variables and finally got it to boot in normal mode.

Here's the nvram settings I added to the default Asus ones:

(I was trying to avoid the bridge... yes, I should have changed lan_ifnames)

However, at some point these got changed (during firstboot?)

So, I guess that you don't actually *need* the nvram vars to boot, but this box isn't booting in failsafe mode... I'll have to look into it more.

I have USB storage running fine from a usb->compact flash reader with a 170MB microdrive...

I just got my WL-500g, but I don't find a way to flash openwrt onto it. The webinterface (Asus Firmware 1.6.5.3, Bootloader 2.2) responds with "Firmware upgrade fail. It may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmare and try again."

When I try flashing via tftp, my tftp clients timeouts without sucessfully uploading the file. My wl-500g is in recovery mode (pressed recovery button on power-on - power-led is blinking). I can ping the wl-500g (but can't reach the webinterface, which proves that it is in recovery/boot_wait mode), but it doesn't answer the tftp packets.

I flash using the firmware recovery tool from windows, pressing the restore button on the back of the router on power up.
I don't know if it is possible to use the tftp client from linux instead, never tried it.

you need the attached script.
It uses tftp, but it's got to have a special file name.
