partly a joke, but it does work like it looks (better then it looks?), and is powered by usb, within specification limits (this suprised me) 
pegasus 2 based usb-ethernet controller, meraki mini, and some hackish power-over-ethernet. the 8-wire ribbon cable is not related. this could have been made a lot neater by using power from the ethernet controller's circuit board and a custom length ethernet cable, but I didn't want to break things unnecessarily for this project.
