Topic: Kamikaze 8.09 RC1 on the WRT54GLv1.1 WiFi Problem

The content of this topic has been archived on 6 Feb 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Yesterday I flashed my WRT54GL with DD-WRT to the latest kamikaze 8.09 RC1 just to check out what I could do with it. Everything went fine, except for the fact that the Wifi doesn't seem to work. I'm probably doing something wrong, as I'm new to OpenWRT (I have quite a bit of experience with Linux itself and DD-WRT, but almost none with Linux on these router devices or wifi devices on linux in general).

Anyway I read the supported page for the WRT54GLv1.1 on the Wiki, and it does say it's supported on 8.09RC1 with 2.6 kernel, but after read a lot of topics on this forum, I'm not sure if this information is right. So am I doing something wrong or is it just not supported yet?

The b43 driver does find the wlan, although I'm not sure what to make of the second to last line..
By the way, if I run 'iwlist wlan0 scan', it does find another network in the neighbourhood, so it does seem to be working, but the 2 laptops I have just can't find the openwrt's network.

Do you have "hostapd" installed?

I didn't have it installed at the time I wrote my post no, I figured I only needed that to use WPA, and even though I do want to use wpa, i wanted to get the wlan working first. But I installed it now (while having some major opkg and space issues tongue), and it works! Thanks for your help smile

P.S. Maybe the comment on the web interface Wifi page is a bit misleading? How about a rephrase to tell people you actually need hostapd to run in AP mode (even if you dont use wpa)?

I have hostapd-mini installed and no wifi, do I need to replace it with hostapd?

[edit]I'd just forgotten to set the channel. Silly me smile

Hi,

I'm new to OpenWRT but I was willing to give it a try (I like more 2.6 than 2.4…).
I've compiled my own kamikaze version with all I need (KAMIKAZE 8.09, r13426) and flashed it on my WRT54GLv1.1.
It's almost working but I've encountered a few issues :
- My wifi is unstable: if a try to transfer a big file via ftp or download something with bit torrent, my wrt freezes
- My wireless clients cannot ping my wired clients: I get an ICMP port unreacheable from the wrt sad (same thing from a wired client to a wireless one)
I solved the 2nd issues with "iptables -A forwarding_lan -o br-lan -j ACCEPT" but I cannot solve the first one sad

Does someone have the same problem? Is there any solution?

Thanks

(my dmesg is filled with

After more research, my router doesn't freeze, il's 'just' the wifi who stop working after a while. (it's work longer if I don't download too much).
I don't know where to get debug message, I just have dmesg output, I hope someone can help me with that

I have the exact problem with a wrt54gs v2.2  Setup for WPA2 Personal...  Loses connectivity with linux 2.6.27 kernels, iPhone, Windows XPO and Vista...  Reverting to the linksys firmware fixes issues....

Any ideas

I just tried with the "trrunk" (r13439) and I still have the same problem sad

I've tried to run hostapd -d and I get this

I just went to the DD-WRT VINT build and the problem went away, but strangely - the kernels are the same as whiterussin that I tried!!!!!  I would much rather use openwrt since I can pick and choose packages, but no help is or pointers on how I can help is keeping m from going back..

I guess the 2,2 version is too old to warrant interest?

-Greg

I've had the same problem - even when I tried newer firmware (478.104 from Linksys WRT610N GPL sources, this was reported to help some people) I was getting PHY transmission errors.
Fortunately, the verison of b43 in Kamikaze 8.09 RC1 supports older firmware too (351.126 from package 4.80.53.0), I've tried this and now it works like a charm.

By the way, if you just want it to be easy, you could install Kamikaze 7.09 or 8.09 RC1 with kernel 2.4 smile

How exactly do I go about installing the older firmware?

graffen wrote:

Here's what i did. It works for me.

apt-get install b43-fwcutter

wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
tar -jxf broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2
cd broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0/kmod
mkdir ~/firmware
b43-fwcutter -w ~/firmware wl_apsta_mimo.o

cd ~/firmware
scp -r b43 root@192.168.1.1:~

# ssh to the router
ssh root@192.168.1.1
cd /
mv /lib/firmware/b43 /root/b43-old
mv /root/b43 /lib/firmware/

reboot

dmesg | grep "firmware version"
b43-phy0: Loading firmware version 351.126 (2006-07-29 05:54:02)

I'm not sure about some of the commands  above(especially whether the version that b43-fwcutter is extracting is FW11 or FW13), but it works for me.
let me know if changing the firmware fixes the frequent disconnects problem for you.

Thanks, I managed to figure it out earlier on.
Unfortunately it hasn't helped much. My wireless still drops its connection but now without writing anything in the log. My router is a WRT54GL v 1.1 if that's any help.

Anything else I can try?

Hmmm
